Unlucky Fall For Jeff

Jeff McGivern

Dedication, especially in bands, is a word that seems to be disappearing rapidly nowadays. That couldn’t be said of Jeff McGivern the band’s 1st Baritone player!

Last Sunday, Ballyduff were due to play in Carnfunnock Country Park just outside Larne. This is a very popular venue with the summer crowds, and on good days the Walled Garden’s natural amphitheatre is usually full.

After the monsoon of the previous day, some band members were convinced they would hardly play much, but as always the weather cleared sufficiently for the first band of the afternoon, Magheramorne Silver, to give their performance.

Jeff had driven through some rather deep puddles on the Saturday, to such an extent that his petrol cap on his car had “fried”. Such is his commitment, he hopped on his motorbike, and rode from Ballymena to Larne. Just as he entered the car park, he slipped and fell from his bike. He dusted himself down and played away quite happily for the band’s programme.

On his return home he felt his knee was rather sore so he headed to the local casualty on Monday morning, who x-rayed his knee and discovered he had broken his knee cap!!! After some stitches and a full leg plaster he was discharged!! Jeff’ll be out of action for at least six weeks!!

Ironically, he and his wife, Kim are due to emigrate to the USA in November. But knowing Jeff he’ll do his best to get back to playing before he leaves!! The band send Jeff best wishes for a speedy recovery!
