Ross Aiken Memorial Trophy
At the BBL Spring Festival held in Glengormley High School on 12th April, the “Ross Aiken Memorial Trophy” was presented for the first time. Ross’s wife, Liz in consultation with the rest of his family, had kindly presented to the trophy to the Brass Band League (BBL). The committee of the BBL had decided to present the trophy to the best soloist in Section 2. The first recipient was David Corry, principal cornet of Downshire Brass. The cup itself was presented to the BBL by Davy Hunter, Ross’s lifelong friend and fellow band member, just before the announcement of the overall results. The vast majority of Ballyduff Silver Band were there to see the trophy presented. It was an emotional occasion both for Davy and the members of the band. Alan Davidson, on behalf of the BBL, paid a very fitting tribute to Ross and outlined the amount of work he did for all types of bands but particularly brass bands, where he had obtained substantial funding for contests over many years and also seeking out suitable venues for the various types of contests organised by the BBL.
