Newtownabbey Borough Council Sport's Awards

Three members of the band were to the forefront at Newtownabbey Borough Council’s annual Sports Awards. They played fanfares as the winners of the various awards made their way to the stage. Mark McKnight, Jenny Hill and the band’s conductor were secreted on the gallery at Ballyearl Theatre and Leisure Complex.

It was an evening were it was very much a case of “Spot the Celebrity” with local dignitaries, such as the Mayor, Alderman Nigel Hamilton, who just happens to the brother of a former principal cornet of the band, Lynley Hamilton, in attendance. The Deputy Lord Mayor of Limerick was also there representing the city with which the borough and also Ballyduff Band have very close links.

Other notable attendees were, Morris Foster from the world of cycling, Dr. Willie John McBride MBE, Kate Hoey MP and award winning sports journalist, Dr. Malcolm Brodie MBE.

Jim Neilly from the BBC compered the awards, which included a glittering array of sporting talent, ranging from future Olympians to two World Champions, honoured in what is becoming one of the highlights in the local sporting calendar.

The winners were:
