Local Band Awarded BT Grant

Local band, Ballyduff Silver, in Newtownabbey has been awarded £100 by the BT Community Champions award scheme thanks to the voluntary work of Mark McKnight, a BT employee.

Run by BT's charity programme, BT Community Champions awards BT people with funding on behalf of local community groups, charities and organisations where they work on a voluntary basis.

Following the first review in 2008-09, funding has been allocated to a variety of groups who demonstrated how the award would make a difference to their group and benefit their local community.

Ballyduff Silver Band is one of hundreds that applied for an award during review four of the scheme and impressed judges with how they would use their grant.

The group plans to use its £100 award to purchase marketing materials to promote the band and it's website.

Mark McKnight of Ballyduff Silver Band said: " We are very pleased with our BT Community Champions award. At the moment we have a website that is growing daily and educating people about the band. Prior to this, learning about the band was by 'word-of-mouth'. We need to promote the band even more to gain both new members and followers of the band. The first thing we are going to do is get some business cards printed with the band website address on them. We will then hand these out at our concerts and other engagements".

BT people can apply for a BT Community Champions award to receive cash grants of up to £500. Funding can be used for purchasing specific equipment or as a contribution towards a particular project. Alternatively, they can apply for a full set of football kit - for under 18s team or for a team of adults with disabilities. For further details visit: BT Community Champions
